Covered Call Early Assignment Checker: Dividend vs Extrinsic Value

Ex-Dividend Early Assignment Checker

Before an ex-dividend date, a call owner may exercise early to collect the dividend. This tool compares the call's time value to the dividend using numbers you enter. It doesn't pick stocks, strikes, or dates, and results ignore taxes, slippage, and other real-world costs unless you enter them. Practice on a paper account first.

How the check works

  • Extrinsic value = call price − intrinsic value (stock price − strike, if positive).
  • If the extrinsic value is less than the dividend, the call owner could gain by exercising the day before the ex-date, so early assignment is more likely.
  • This is a rule of thumb, not a guarantee either way.
