SEC Yield vs Distribution Yield vs Trailing 12-Month Yield Explained

Yield Types Decoder

Funds quote several yields that can look nothing alike. Enter numbers from a fund's fact sheet (or use the made-up examples) to calculate all three.

  • SEC yield = 2 × [((a − b) ÷ (c × d) + 1)6 − 1], where a = income, b = expenses, c = average shares, d = price. Here a and b are per share, so c = 1.
